Mario (マリオ) is a fictional character owned by Nintendo and created by Japanese video game designer Shigeru Miyamoto. Mario is the main character in the Mario video game franchise and serves as the mascot for Nintendo. Mario is generally depicted as an Italian plumber who resides in the Mushroom Kingdom and must regularly save Princess Peach from the clutches of Bowser.
In several levels of the game, staring in level 3-3, Mario will encounter the Boss Bass enemy, a giant Cheep Cheep that pursues Mario throughout the stage. If Boss Bass catches Mario, it will swallow him whole, resulting an instant death and causing the player to lose a life. This scenario also occurs in the Super Mario-All Stars remake.
In the Tiny-Huge Island stage, Mario will encounter the enemy Boss Bass (or Bubba as he is called in the N64 version) while swimming in the water. Boss Bass will pursue Mario and, if he manages to catch him, will swallow him whole. This will result in an instant death and cause the player to lose a life. This scenario also occurs in the Super Mario 64 DS remake.
Early on in the game, Mario, Luigi, and Paper Mario battle Petey Piranha who serves as the first boss. During the battle, Petey will often perform an attack in which he grabs either Mario or Luigi, chews them in his mouth, causing damage, and then swallows them. After Petey receives enough damage, he will spit out the eaten brother(s). However, he is capable of eating both Mario and Luigi and if Paper Mario falls in battle while they are both in Petey's stomach, the game will end.
